I turned a dog and pony show into a PR man’s nightmare.

The night before the University of Missouri was set to announce a “5 star rating” for their cooperation with active-duty employees, I found out a University policy held active duty students to a tougher standard than regular, civilian students. So, as I clipped the microphone on the Chancellor’s jacket the day of the event, I knew he had no idea what was about to hit him.

If you watch the first story in the "televison examples" section, you’ll see the story I put together that same day. Before it aired at 6 pm, the policy had already been removed from the University website. We later found out VA reps had been trying to get it changed for months. Within days, special meetings were held to discuss changing the policy. Currently, the overriding state law is also being re-examined.

I feel journalism is a vital part of our society, to provide a public journal that serves and protects the rights of people to knowledge of the world around them. As Walter Williams wrote in the journalist’s creed, a journalism that, “…seeks to give every man a chance and, as far as law and honest wage and recognition of human brotherhood can make it so, an equal chance.” This is something I believe in, and something I want to be a part of.

Since I began pursuing this career, I’ve taken every opportunity that’s come my way to practice and improve my skills. I’ve worked as a reporter and anchor at KOMU, an NBC affiliate. In the past year, I’ve also worked as a part-time anchor, reporter, and producer for two radio news stations. Often, in a course of three days, I’d be on-air representing three different news agencies. The experience in these newsrooms; turning out daily stories, as well as long-form and investigative work, has helped me realize this is what I’m supposed to do with my life.
